
Spotlight on Metis Filmmakers
The weather is turning wintery and we at Li Isprii think that this is the ideal time of year to curl up with a hot drink and a good movie. Metis filmmakers across the diaspora are putting out work in just about every genre you can think of, and probably a few you’ve never heard of before. From avant-garde film festival darlings to gritty dramas, stop-motion animation to rom-coms, reality television, feature-length documentaries, snappy web series, far-away flights of science-fiction… there’s something here for everyone!
Janelle and Jérémie Wookey
Francophone Métis siblings Janelle and Jérémie Wookey head up Wookey Productions, based in Winnipeg’s historic Exchange District. In 2008 they released their first major project together, an indie documentary titled Mémere Métisse about their grandmother, Cecile St. Amant, and her refusal to admit to, never mind embrace, her Métis identity. A celebration of history and identity, the film follows Janelle as she works to convince her Mémere to see the value in an identity she’s previously seen only as a source of shame…
